Indian Creek runs win streak to four
In the process of surviving a physical battle Saturday, Indian Creek chalked up its fourth straight win with a 4-2 decision over visiting Westminster Christian.
For the second straight match, the Timberwolves opened the scoring early as Clayton Peterson used a Carlos Sanchez set-up for his fourth goal of the season after just 1:32. Unfortunately for IC, Peterson was forced to exit midway through the half and was sent to a hospital due to a possible concussion. Matt Kyler’s second goal of the season enabled the hosts to go ahead 2-0.
Eight minutes into the second half, Westminster Christian converted a penalty kick opportunity to cut the deficit in half. T-wolves goalie Aaron Bolton got the worst of a collision at the 50-minute time-point and had to be replaced in net by Shaquille Clayton.
The physical battle led to an Indian Creek penalty kick chance and although the WCHS goalie made an initial stop, Bret Ostrom followed his initial blast with a second boot that gave the Timberwolves a 3-1 lead. It was also Ostrom’s fifth goal for 2010.
Not long after Bolton re-entered as goalie, Indian Creek was awarded another penalty kick opportunity and coach Eric Schrader opted to allow Bolton to go forward and the sophomore was successful in putting ICHS ahead 4-1 with 8:30 remaining.
Westminster Christian managed to make it a 4-2 contest by converting another penalty kick with four minutes left in regulation.
"This was the second straight game we came out and scored early which allowed us to control the tempo of the game. We had a lot of guys banged up today," Schrader noted, adding that Dillon Masterson also got sidelined by an elbow to the mouth. "They’re a very aggressive team and play hard, so I was proud of the way we played, keeping our heads and getting a hard-fought win."
After a 1-2-0 start, Indian Creek now sports a 5-2-0 ledger heading into a Tuesday 4:30 p.m. visit to Paw Paw, which will serve as the Timberwolves’ Little Ten Conference opener.
Earlville-Leland rallies for 3-1 win over Princeton
Despite falling behind 1-0, Earlville-Leland rallied to capture a 3-1 road win over Princeton Saturday on the road.
The Red Raiders’ Jake Baker had the assist pass on Chris Collins’ first-half goal which led to a 1-1 intermission draw. In the 60th minute of the contest, Javier Hernandez rocketed an unassisted 30-yard strike to give E-L the lead. With seven minutes left, Colton Hall’s unassisted tally gave Earlville-Leland a two-goal edge and accounted for the final score. Defensively, Cory Buhler notched 15 saves in net.
The Red Raiders now set their sights on a Friday 6:30 p.m. visit to Hinckley-Big Rock in a crucial LTC regular-season showdown. Earlville-Leland boasts a 5-1-0 overall record and is off to a 1-0-0 start for league play.
Somonauk stumbles at home
After opening the season with four victories, Somonauk is suddenly struggling with the latest stumble being a 2-0 home loss to Stillman Valley on Saturday.
After a 3-1 loss in their LTC opener at Leland, the Bobcats posted a 2-2 tie at Lisle on Friday prior to Saturday’s setback against the Cardinals. Somonauk has a week to regroup before hosting Oregon at 2 p.m. on Sept. 11.
