Earlville-Leland scores big road win at Newark
NEWARK --- With seven different players contributing Earlville-Leland kept its hopes alive for a share of the Little Ten Conference regular-season crown with a 5-1 road victory over Newark.
Felix Hernandez’s started the Red Raiders’ offensive fireworks with an unassisted goal and then Max Boltz set up Dalton Heath before Tyler Becker converted a penalty kick for a 3-0 halftime lead after Heath was taken down in the box.
Chris Collins also converted a PK opportunity in the second half and Danny Pfaff earned an assist on Brady Saylor’s strike which capped the scoring for coach Mike Corvo’s ballclub. Cory Buhler added another shutout half to his resume before Tanner Jacobs took over in net for the final 15 minutes. Both keepers had a pair of saves, but Jacobs wasn’t able to stop a late Norsemen penalty kick.
Earlville Leland (9-3-1 / 4-1-0) has its final home game on Friday in Leland when the Red Raiders host Paw Paw, now under the direction of former E-L coach Roger Essman.
Lauritzen hat trick paces Somonauk win at Paw Paw
Ethan Lauritzen’s hat trick propelled Somonauk (11-2-1 / 4-1-0) to an LTC victory over Paw Paw (6-8-1 / 1-4-0) on Monday (see Brian Hoxsey’s story).
Gullstrands’ return sparks T-wolves shutout of Serena
SERENA --- "Welcome back Ryan Gullstrand!" was just one of coach Eric Shrader’s thoughts after Indian Creek cruised to a 6-0 shutout at Serena on Monday.
The senior quad-captain was injured in the Timberwolves’ season opener and was making just his second appearance since returning to action and obviously made an impact with his first and second goals of the season. In fact, Gullstrand used a Shaquille Crayton assist to put ICHS ahead 1-0 at halftime.
Gullstrand used Bret Ostrom’s team-best 11th set-up of the season to make it 2-0 in the second half and then Marr Kyler assisted on Bret Ostrom’s seventh goal of the year. Dillon Martensen made use of Kyler’s seventh assist of the year for a 4-0 lead. After an unassisted strike by Tom Kallas, Caleb Gaston fed Carlos Sanchez for the final goal of the match.
“Ryan is officially back and actually just missed getting a hat trick. Our mids and forwards looked really good today,” Schrader said. “We passed the ball well and really kept possession for most of the game. We only allowed Serena a few chances and Jake Bjorneby (three saves) did a nice job in goal to get his second shutout in a row.”
In addition to improving to 2-3-0 in the LTC, Indian Creek now takes a 9-6-0 mark into Thursday’s home finale against DePue.
Passing not up to par but H-BR’s Royals still triumph
HINCKLEY --- Even if the passing game wasn’t up to par, Hinckley-Big Rock still managed a 3-0 non-conference victory over Mendota Monday.
In another example of what coach Paul Taeuber termed “winning ugly,” the Royals boosted their season ledger to 13-2-1 heading into a Wednesday visit to Princeton with a five-match win streak. Bernie Conley and Tim Engel both tallied unassisted goals in the opening half with Engel’s being his 11th goal of the year to go with five assists for 27 points.
Conley recorded his 13th goal with a second-half tally to go with six assists to bump his team-best point tally to 32. Justin Salazar made 13 saves for his fifth solo shutout effort to go along with three additional shutout halves.
