Steve Goers Retires

Veteran Rockford Boylan boys basketball coach Steve Goers announced his retirement from coaching today.

Goers, 69, is Illinois's all-time leader in boys basketball coaching wins with 881. He started his head coaching career in Bardolph in 1967 and became head coach at Oswego in 1971. Since then, Goers has had stops at LaSalle-Peru and Harvard before taking over for Dolph Stanley at Boylan in 1980.

In addition to coaching Oswego to the Class AA State Tournament in 1972, Goers has coached seven state teams at Boylan (1984-85 to 1986-87, 1991-92, 1993-94, 1996-97 and 2006-07) and his teams have won 16 sectional championships.

Boylan's legacy doesn't end there, as the Titan program has strung together 30 consecutive winning seasons (tied for third all-time), and ten of those years were a string of seasons with 20-plus wins.

Boylan finished the 2010-11 season with a record of 23-6, a season which Goers surpassed Westchester St. Joseph's Gene Pingatore for the all-time wins record. Goers currently sits ten wins ahead of Pingatore's 871.
